Movie Tarot

This is a special project — I submitted the original idea to the publisher and we developed it into a fully functional tarot deck. Along with a tarot consultant and the editorial team at LKP, we selected the archetypal movie characters that were most suited for the cards. I also found a brilliant young illustrator, Natalie Foss, to create the visuals I had in mind, and designed every element, from the box to the back of the cards.

Reading Carl Jung’s writings about the hero’s journey and Alejandro Jodorowsky’s teachings about tarot, I started imagining a way for people to connect with the cards on a “simpler” level — by using the archetypal personalities of our favourite movie characters.

Tom Hanks in Forrest Gump becomes the Fool, a naive, young soul, running free on life’s open paths. Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal from Brokeback Mountain are the Lovers, and Björk in Dancer in the Dark is portrayed as the Hanged Man, who surrenders to allow life to move forward.
